Meeting Notes For May 2011

May’s Meeting – Joe Mayo– Async : Today and Tomorrow

Last week we had a great talk on threading and asynchronous programming from Joe Mayo.  He started by going through the “old” methods of doing threading.  He gave good examples and discussed the pros and cons of each method.  He finished up by discussing the new Task Parallel Libraries (TPL) available in .NET 4 and the Async keywords coming in the next version of the framework.  Joe has provided his samples and slides here. Enjoy!

One other important note is that next month’s meeting will be a day early.  June’s meeting is on MONDAY, June 13th.  We are honored to have Philip Japikse speaking.  Philip travels the world and speaks at TechEd, VS Live as well as many community groups and code camps.  Make sure to mark your calendar and look for the email blast for meeting details.

Have a good one and see you soon!

Joe Mayo – C# Async: Today and Tomorrow?

This talk will cover the current state of async, what the challenges are, and how your job will be made easier with the new language features.

It seems like it was only a few years ago that MVC 1.0 came out, while in fact, it was. Microsoft has been aggressive in releasing new updates to the MVC framework, and in this session we will take a brief look about what MVC is, and then dig into the new features that MVC 3.0 brings, including the new Razor view engine, new dependency injection support, unobtrusive validation, ajax, jQuery, Nuget, and more.

Ely Lucas: Ely has been writing web applications for over ten years on the Microsoft platform. He is a Senior Developer at SS&C technologies, and specializes in ASP.NET, C#, and SQL Server development. He lives with his wife, son, and dog in Westminster, CO.

Adam Roderick – The JavaScript Revue: Frameworks and Patterns

Admit it. If it wasn't for jQuery plugins, you would still be hacking together JavaScript snippets from across the internets, in hopes that nobody came along later to discover your dirty little secret. That's nice and all, but it doesn't make you feel like a ""real"" JavaScript developer. Are there any patterns out there? When should we use dojo vs. jQuery vs. YUI? What are the other useful libraries? What about enterprise development--things like unit testing and automated builds?  JavaScript is heavily utilized by the new HTML 5 standard. The more you know about it, the better prepared you will be for the future of web development.  Come enjoy a Revue of JavaScript Frameworks and Patterns, and get your JavaScript development on!

Adam Roderick:  Adam "The Computer Whisperer" Roderick understands software. He is a developer at heart, but has spent time in all roles of a development project, including project manager, business analyst, and scrummaster.  Recent projects include technologies such as ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight, and SharePoint.
